The 2014 vintage was defined by almost no rainfall and a historically early budbreak. The vintage saw sustained periods of warm to hot weather with no dangerous heat spikes. With no real cool down, the harvest was a bit earlier then average, with red grape varietal harvest starting mid- September. These perfect conditions allowed for slow grape development and focused varietal characteristics. The grapes retained delightful acidity, resulting in well-balanced wines with rich concentrated varietal flavors. The wine was fermented in small lots using hand-crafted winemaking techniques and matured for 22 months in a combination of new and seasoned, two year old, and neutral Taransaud French Oak Barrels. The wine was racked three times in barrel and bottled in July of 2016.
The wine exhibits dark aromas full of ripe black royal bing cherries, hints of toast, plum, sweet tobacco with a hint of clay and earthiness. The wine is seductive, bright, fresh and savory on the palate with a lovely long finish full of fine tannins, red fruits and chocolate. Delicious paired with grilled red meat and will age beautifully for the next ten to fifteen years.
