2012 was an exceptional vintage, both in terms of productivity and quality. In the spring there was no frost and the weather was excellent at fruit set. As the summer progressed we had a long consistent growing season without any significant heat spikes. There was no rain to speak of at harvest time. The crop itself was larger than in prior years and the additional heat from the long even summer allowed the grapes to ripen evenly across the blocks. The wine was fermented in small lots using hand-crafted winemaking techniques and matured for 22 months in a combination of 31% new and seasoned 20% two year old, and 43% neutral Taransaud French oak barriques. The wine was racked three times and bottled in July of 2014.
The nose has notes of dark cherries, earth, cedar wood, raspberries, and plums. On the palate the wine is richly concentrated, beautifully focused, with deep-set dark cherry, chocolate, cedar flavors, complimented with black olive and fine-grain tannins. The wine continues with red and black plums, saddle leather, berries and dusty tannins. The wine is wonderful to drink today and will continue to evolve in balance, length and complexity as the more structured Cabernet Sauvignon matures. This wine will continue to develop and excel over the next ten years.
