It was a year dominated by different kinds of weather. It was a nice cool growing season with a spring frost and some rain mid-harvest. Light moisture in early October was followed by good drying conditions with sunny, breezy weather. The vintage weather conditions resulted in below average yields. The slightly smaller crop size and good harvest weather allowed us to pick the fruit with balanced sugar, acid and grape maturity. Overall, a very nice vintage. The wine was fermented in small lots using hand-crafted winemaking techniques and matured for 22 months in approximately 50% new and 50% one and two year old Taransaud French Oak Barrels. The wine was racked three times prior to bottling. We bottled in July of 2013 and released in Fall of 2015.
The wine exhibits deep aromas of spice, dark bing cherries, wood, burnt blackberries and jam. On the palate there are slight herbal/floral flavors with minerality, dried violets and tobacco all surrounded by dense fruit. This a truly lovely wine that is wonderful to drink today when paired with big rich cuisine such as Santa Maria Tri-Tip. The wines structure will allow it to mature and age nicely for at least another decade!
